In glorious sunshine the Friends gathered at Tewkesbury Abbey for their annual festival on Sunday 8th July, and a group of Friends visited Glastonbury Abbey and Wells Cathedral the following day. Photographs from each day can be viewed on the Gallery page and a report from the visit to Glastonbury and Wells can be viewed via this link to the Visits page. A resume of the visit will also be included in our autumn newsletter later this year, do look out for it.
The annual Friends’ Festival is just one week away – Sunday 8th July. Join us for the 9.15am Parish Eucharist or the 11.00am Sung Eucharist when the Young Friends Banner will be dedicated and paraded, stay on to the Bring and Share lunch in the parish hall (no booking required), followed by the Annual General Meeting and talk. Afternoon tea will be served before Choral Evensong at 5.00pm. To finish the day take a picnic to Abbey House garden for ‘Brass on the Grass’ (tickets £10, from the Abbey shop or on the gate) or stroll round Tewkesbury, now looking resplendent with the medieval banners and beautiful floral displays. It promises to be a splendid occasion.
The planned Friends’ visit to Glastonbury and Wells on Monday 9th July is now fully booked. A reserves list has been set up so do let us know if you are interested in being added to this. We are sorry that a number of Friends are going to be disappointed at not being able to join this trip, but it is good to know that our Friends’ visits and events are so popular.
The transcript for the excellent talk by Dr Julian Luxford on the subject “The Founders’ Book: Art, Heraldry and History in Medieval Tewkesbury”, and the accompanying presentation slides, are now available from the Fitzhamon Lecture page on this site. This was an excellent and informative evening and is well worth discovering, or revisiting if you were fortunate enough to be present!
This year there will again be two designs available to purchase from the Abbey or by post. They are both scenes of the Abbey taken by Tewkesbury photographer Jack Boskett when the snow fell early last winter. We are awaiting supplies from the printers but it is not too early to send in your orders. We expect these cards to sell fast so do not leave it until December! An order form giving further details, including prices for the cards and postage, can be opened and downloaded from this link.
This year’s Friends’ Festival will be held on Sunday 8th July and will have a ‘children and young people’ focus as we celebrate a very successful year for our Young Friends. Full details for the day can be found on our Friends Festival page. You do not have to be a Friend to come along to all or part of the day so if you are interested in finding out more about The Friends of Tewkesbury Abbey do join us!
The Friends of Tewkesbury Abbey is a member organisation with the expectation from our members that they will receive news and information. We have taken the opportunity of the new General Data Protection Regulations to check with our members that the contact details we hold are correct and to confirm the preference for how we make contact. A ‘GDPR’ sheet has been included in this year’s annual mailing which was sent out in May, so please return this and remain in touch!
Until May 2018 the website presence for The Friends of Tewkesbury Abbey has been on the Tewkesbury Abbey website. This new website gives the Friends the opportunity to expand what it makes available – advertising events, providing news updates, reporting and sharing its activities with a wider audience. It will probably take a month or two for it to become populated with all the areas which we hope to make available so do bear with us, and if you have any suggestions for what you would like to see then please get in touch.
